1. How far will electric cars travel in real-world Australian conditions?

To give yourself an adequate safety buffer on regional trips, plan your stops assuming 75% of the vehicle’s advertised range.
2. How long do EV batteries last, and what happens when they degrade?
The Reality: Modern EV battery packs rely on complex Lithium-ion (NMC or LFP) chemistries that are regulated by Liquid Thermal Management Systems (TMS). Battery degradation is slow, typically averaging only 1% to 2% of State of Health (SoH) loss per year.
Tip: Before purchasing a used EV, book a specialised EV State of Health (SoH) diagnostic scan from a certified local EV mechanic. An ongoing maintenance strategy to extend your battery’s lifespan is to set your EV’s daily charging limit to 80%.
3. Do EVs wear out tyres faster than petrol or diesel cars?
The Reality: Yes. EVs typically experience 20% to 30% faster tyre wear due to two factors: instant peak torque from 0 RPM and increased kerb weight (from heavy battery packs). 4. Where are the public EV charging stations for regional travel in Australia?
The Reality: Australia’s public fast-charging grid is expanding rapidly, with more than 1,000 active fast-charging sites nationwide. Major routes, such as the Hume, Pacific, and Bruce highways) are well-equipped with Direct Current (DC) Ultra-Fast chargers delivering up to 350 kW. The universal CCS2 charging standard is being used across Australia, so non-Tesla models can seamlessly recharge at the vast majority of newer Tesla Supercharging sites.

5. What are the actual maintenance requirements and servicing costs for an electric vehicle?
The Reality: Unlike vehicles with internal combustion engines, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have no spark plugs, timing belts, oil filters, or complex exhaust systems. More than 200 moving parts are no longer in the picture with EVs. However, electric vehicles are not maintenance-free. They require specialised logbook servicing to inspect high-voltage wiring integrity, flush safety-critical braking fluids, test glycol-based battery coolant lines, replace cabin air filters, and service heavy-duty suspension bushings built to carry heavy battery packs.
Tip: Stick firmly to a preventative maintenance schedule that includes a coolant hydrometer test to protect the battery pack’s thermal loop from breakdown. Check your tyre pressures every month. To prevent uneven tread wear caused by the instant torque of an electric motor, you want to keep your tyres inflated to the manufacturer’s exact specification.
6. Are electric vehicle batteries a potential fire hazard?
The Reality: EVs are 20 to 60 times less likely to burst into flames than traditional petrol or diesel vehicles. So says the comprehensive global data. EV battery packs are encased in heavy armour that needs to meet strict Australian Design Rules (ADRs). Spontaneous failure resulting in fire is exceptionally rare with causes attributed to severe impact or substandard charging hardware.
Tip: Never use cheap aftermarket charging cables and never have uncertified modifications done to your car’s electrical architecture. If you notice structural damage to the underbody of your EV after hitting debris on the road, do not park it inside an enclosed garage. Take it straight to a certified repair facility for an underbody casing inspection to check for cell deformation.
7. Can an electric vehicle safely tow a caravan or boat in Australia?
The Reality: Electric motors deliver maximum torque starting at 0 RPM, allowing EVs to effortlessly pull heavy loads up steep inclines. However, towing will double your vehicle’s aerodynamic drag and overall rolling resistance. From an efficiency perspective, towing a large, un-aerodynamic caravan would drop your driving range by a factor of 40% to 50%.
Tip: Check your vehicle’s legal limits on its compliance plate for maximum braked towing capacity and towball download weight. Many smaller EVs are restricted or not rated for towing at all. Carefully map out your travel route when hauling a heavy trailer or camper, to safely accommodate the increased energy consumption. Aim for shorter 150 to 200 km intervals between public charging stops.
8. How does our tax system make buying an EV cheaper?
The Reality: The Australian Federal Government’s Electric Car Discount provides an impressive financial incentive that exempts eligible fully electric vehicles (BEVs) from the standard 47% Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), while older plug-in hybrid (PHEV) agreements remain subject to strict ATO transition rules. Eligibility is determined by the car’s retail price being below the Luxury Car Tax (LCT) threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles.
Tip: Do not, as an employee, pay for a new EV with cash or a personal bank loan. Instead, turn to your employer’s salary packaging and ask for a Novated Lease quote. This would allow you to pay for the vehicle’s finance payments, comprehensive insurance, tyres, electricity, and servicing directly out of your pre-tax salary and save you thousands of dollars a year in income tax.
9. Is it safe to always use public DC fast charging?
The Reality: Continual use of high-output DC fast chargers (100 kW to 350 kW) will generate significant internal thermal stress and accelerate chemical degradation in your battery cells. To protect the pack from overheating, your vehicle’s internal computer will ramp down charging speeds significantly once the battery hits 80%.
Tip: Follow the 80/20 charging rule for long-term optimal battery performance. For 80% (or more) of the time, use slower, gentler AC charging – at home, work, or public destination chargers – for your car’s routine energy needs. Recharge at those high-output DC fast charging stations when travelling long distances, for 20% or less of the remaining time.
10. Considering they’re charging from Australia’s coal-fired grid, how green are EVs in reality?
The Reality: Over their operating lifespans, carbon emission from an EV powered completely by Australia’s electricity grid, will be significantly less than from a petrol or diesel vehicle. Electric drivetrains operate at roughly 85% to 90% energy efficiency. Whereas internal combustion engines waste up to 70% of their fuel as heat. As Australia’s grid integrates more solar, wind, and hydro power, your EV will become even cleaner over time.
Tip: Cut your car’s charging emissions entirely by pairing your EV with a home solar array and a smart, internet-connected Wallbox. Configure the charger to run exclusively on “Eco” or “Solar-Only” mode. Surplus, zero-emission electricity generated by your rooftop panels will be routed directly into the car’s battery during peak daylight hours instead of feeding it back into the main grid.
11. Can I charge an electric car at home using a standard 10A wall plug?
The Reality: Yes, via emergency trickle chargers (Level 1). A standard Australian 240V, 10-amp power outlet delivers around 2.3 kW of alternating current (AC). From empty, you’d need up to 30+ hours for a fully charge an average 60 kWh to 80 kWh EV battery because charging at 2.3 kW adds only about 10 to 15 kilometres of range per hour.
Tip: Bypass standard outlets if you drive more than 40 km per day. Have a licensed electrician upgrade your garage or carport by installing a dedicated 7 kW single-phase or 22 kW three-phase Level 2 wallbox. This will safely speed up charging, adding 45 to 130 kilometres of range per hour while you sleep.
12. Are electric vehicles more expensive to insure in Australia?
The Reality: Insurance premiums for EVs can be 10% to 25% higher than for their combustion engine equivalents. For the time being, this is due to the high costs to replace structural battery packs after accidents, long wait times for imported components (increasing courtesy replacement car rental), and a current shortage of certified EV panel beaters.
Tip: Before buying your EV, use the exact variant model code and get comprehensive insurance quotes. Look for specialty insurers or mainstream clubs (e.g. RACQ, NRMA, or RACV) that offer dedicated EV policies featuring coverage for home wallbox chargers, charging cables, and specialised towing to the nearest compatible charger if you run out of battery.
13. Can you drive an electric car through deep water or floods?
The Reality: You should heed all warnings against driving into flood waters. That said, unlike most petrol vehicles, EVs lack an air intake or exhaust system, meaning that in deep water, the motor cannot ‘hydro-lock’. High-voltage battery packs and drive units are also hermetically sealed and rated to IP67 or IP69 waterproof standards, meaning they can withstand submersion in up to one metre of water for roughly 30 minutes without leaking.
Tip: Best not to think of your EV being a boat on wheels. Sure the electrical system is sealed, but water can still ruin your low-voltage cabin electronics, carpets, and brake components. If your EV does get subjected to such water exposure, have the integrity of the high-voltage seals checked by booking an underbody casing inspection and insulation resistance test at a certified EV workshop.
14. What is “Regenerative Braking” and how do I use it correctly?
The Reality: Regenerative braking puts the electric motor’s role in reverse. When you lift your foot off the accelerator, the motor becomes a generator, recharging your battery by converting kinetic energy from the vehicle’s forward momentum into electrical energy. This regenerative braking process handles up to 90% of routine braking, slowing the car down smoothly and dramatically reducing wear on physical brake pads and rotors.
Tip: Set your regenerative braking in the vehicle’s driving menu to ‘High’ or ‘One-Pedal Driving’ mode. Rather than using the physical brake pedal, ease off the accelerator smoothly to slow down. This helps maximise your driving range. It’s important to periodically apply your mechanical brakes firmly. Doing so generates heat and cleans the components, helping protect your brakes from rust and seizing due to under-use.
15. Are there warning signs to watch for if my EV battery pack is faulty or about to fail?
The Reality: Total battery failure is rare, but cellular imbalance can occur. Warning signs include sudden, unexpected drops in the displayed State of Charge (SoC) – for example, falling from 40% to 15% in a single kilometre, or a significant decrease in maximum driving range over weeks rather than years. Another sign is the vehicle entering restricted power “Limp Mode.”
Tip: Take note of your car’s charging behaviour. If it consistently stops charging before hitting its set target limit, or if the dashboard shows an ‘Electrical System Fault’ warning, do not attempt to clear the code. Take it straight to an EV specialist for a cell-voltage delta scan to measure the voltage variance between individual battery modules.
16. How do I jump-start an EV, or use an EV to jump-start a petrol car?
The Reality: EVs contain two batteries: the high-voltage traction battery pack (400V–800V) and a standard 12V lead-acid or lithium auxiliary battery that powers the computers, dashboards, and safety relays. If the 12V auxiliary battery dies, the car will not turn on, even if the main high-voltage battery is at 100%.
Tip: You can safely jump-start a dead 12V battery in an EV using a portable jump-pack or another car, following the exact terminal layout in your owner’s manual. However, never use a running EV to jump-start a petrol or diesel car, as the cranking current required by internal combustion engines can easily fry your EV’s delicate DC-to-DC converter.
17. Can an old petrol car be converted to electric?
The Reality: Yes, EV retrofitting is a growing industry. It involves removing the engine, fuel tank, and exhaust, and installing an electric motor, battery modules, and a control unit. However, the process is highly technical and tightly regulated in Australia under Vehicle Standards Bulletin 14 (VSB14) Section LV, requiring formal engineering certification, sign-offs on structural weight distribution, and high-voltage safety compliance.
Tip: If you hope to convert a classic car, do not buy parts blindly online. Partner with a certified automotive engineering consultant first to draft a compliance plan. Make sure your build budget accounts for structural modifications, as well as suspension and brake upgrades in order to handle the extra battery weight. Also budget for the mandatory post-build engineering certification required for legal registration.
18. What’s the difference between AC charging and DC charging? And which plugs do I use for which?
The Reality: Alternating Current (AC) is the type of power that comes from your home wall outlets and Level 2 destination chargers. The vehicle’s internal onboard charger needs to convert this into DC for its battery. Direct Current (DC) is provided at public ultra-fast roadside chargers, bypassing the car’s internal converter to go, at high speed, directly into the battery pack.
Tip: For charging at home, use the top circular portion of your car’s port (the Type 2 AC plug). When using public fast chargers, pull back the lower rubber dust cap to expose the two large pins underneath, converting the port into a CCS2 Combo plug capable of handling high-power DC charging.
19. What should I check when buying a second hand electric car in Australia?
The Reality: Second-hand EVs generally have fewer mechanical risks than used petrol cars (no hidden engine sludge or transmission slips). The major concern is the battery pack. If it was left permanently flat at 0%, or stored continuously at 100% in hot Queensland weather, the battery may have degraded internal health that is not evident from the dashboard display.
Tip: Never buy a used EV based on a standard safety certificate alone. Make the sale conditional on an independent EV battery diagnostics report. A specialist technician can plug into the OBD2 port to verify the actual State of Health (SoH) percentage and confirm that the voltage gap between individual battery cells is uniform.
20. Do EVs need special precautions when being towed?
The Reality: Towing an EV should never be done with its wheels on the ground. Because the electric motors are connected to the drive axles without a mechanical neutral gear, forcing the wheels to spin while the car is turned off generates induction electricity. This can rapidly overheat the electric motor and permanently destroy the high-voltage inverter.
Tip: Explicitly request a flatbed tow-truck or a vehicle dolly system, if your EV has broken down or punctured a tyre. Make sure your tow operator verifies that your vehicle is in its software-enabled ‘Tow Mode’ or ‘Transport Mode’ before moving it and that its designated, screw-in emergency tow eyelet is used when pulling it onto the flatbed.
